What makes a happy person?
People sometimes ask me, “how do you manage to keep so happy and positive?” and I don't really know what the answer is. I've always been naturally upbeat and with a positive mental attitude. My mother used to call me her “little sunshine”. Perhaps there is a talent for happiness, which people possess in greater or lesser degree, like a talent for singing or gardening or doing math?

I guess there's also a natural set-point for a person’s happiness - certain situations can depress you, but eventually you bounce back up to your set-point. So even though I’m a naturally happy person, I still get down if things don’t go my way – for a few hours, or even a few days if things are really bad.

And then I’ll notice that the sun is still shining and I’ll say, “This is so boring being unhappy, I’m tired of it” and I’ll do something fun, something simple like hiking or reading an inspiring quote or soaking in a hot bath, and I’ll feel much better and I’m back to my natural happiness set point.

Maybe that's what they mean by being “happy for no reason”.

Perhaps it’s a matter of the amount of endorphins your body naturally produces – to get all scientific about it. You either produce endorphins yourself or you use things like drugs or alcohol to get "high" - obviously doing it yourself is better, no side effects or addictions!

I’d love to hear your stories about happiness, and your ideas for being happy and staying happy.

In fact, I’m compiling a book about happiness called “Happy Me, Happy You, Happy World”. I want the book to be full of contributions from other people, because I believe that by sharing what we have to offer we can all increase the “set-point” of happiness for the entire world.

You can participate by joining my new Facebook group – Happy Me, Happy You, Happy World.
